How to Calculate the Best Table Size for Your Dining Room

ErikaWittlieb/CC0/Pixabay

Congratulations on your decision to get a new dining room table. Choosing a new style of table can change the whole vibe in your dining area. It's important to choose a table that fits the size of your room so there's room for everyone to walk around. Taking the time to measure the size of your dining room and comparing your open floor space to standard table sizes can help you choose a piece of furniture that's a good fit for your home.

Determine the Size of Your Dining Area

Hook the end of a tape measure to something solid against the wall, like the door trim, or have a helper hold the end against the wall. Measure all the way across the room to the opposite wall. Make a note of this size, and then repeat the measuring process on the other two walls in the room. Multiply the two numbers together to determine the size of the room in square feet. If you're choosing a dining table for a room in a house with an open floor plan, measure to the edge of the area where you want the dining area to end.

Draw the Room

Sketch the room on a sheet of grid paper or enter the dimensions in a 3D room layout planning tool. While a larger open space around the table gives a room a casual, airy feeling, allow a minimum of three feet around the perimeter of the room for walking space. The remaining space in the center of the room is the maximum to allow for a dining table. It's easier to fit a small table into a large room than it is to crowd an oversized table into a tiny room. If you have extra floor space available after placing your dining table, you can adjust the way it's positioned in the room to enhance the flow of foot traffic and increase visual appeal.

Consider Decor Elements Around the Room's Outer Edge

Some pieces of furniture are big enough they're hard to move, making them almost a permanent part of your floor plan. If there are other large furnishings around the outer edge of the room, such as a hutch or curio cabinet, be sure to include the dimensions of those items in your sketch and in your calculations.

The Role of Table Top Shapes in Choosing Table Size

This is a tip you may see at play if you look closely at tabletops for restaurants. This is because restaurant tables are often packed in snugly to provide seating for as many patrons as possible. When space is at a premium — for example if you have a small dining area and can't arrange it to leave floor space around the table — consider a round or oval table. The rounded edges of the tabletop can allow for foot traffic.

Consider a Table That Has a Leaf

Choosing a table that has a leaf is one easy way to accommodate an occasional large group while enjoying the coziness of a small table. Just add the leaf when guests are coming over and remove it when there's a smaller group present. Floor space may be tied up with the leaf is installed, but it's also freed up when you restore the table to its smaller leaf-free size.

Murals For Dining Room Walls

Murals For Dining Room Walls

Expert advice on how to prepare both the room and the walls before wallpapering. Includes information on dealing with various types of wall surfaces, from existing wallpaper to plaster.

Before beginning the job of wallpapering, it's critically important to prepare both the room and the walls. Wallpapering can be a messy job, so it's important to prepare and protect the room beforehand. In addition, because wallpapering requires precise work and a steady pace, you will want to have all the necessary tools and supplies ready.

The walls must be flat, smooth, and able to accept wallpaper to ensure a successful result.

Preparing the Room

Start by taking all lightweight objects and furniture out of the room. Drape drop cloths over anything remaining and then lay drop cloths on the floor. To catch water that drips down the walls, lay towels over the baseboards. Do not use newspapers as protection anywhere because the ink can transfer onto other surfaces if they get wet.

Next, take down everything that is on the walls, including rods for window coverings.

It helps to remove all electrical face plates and lighting fixtures, but don't do this without first turning off the power to those circuits and/or protecting against the possibility of touching live wires.

If you have painted any part of the room, such as trim, make sure it is thoroughly dry before starting to wallpaper.

Gathering Your Supplies

Now that the room is prepared, move in your tools (see Wallpapering Tools & Supplies) and equipment—a ladder, sander or sanding block, 50-grit sandpaper, plastic bags, a bucket, sponges, and trisodium phosphate (TSP) or a TSP substitute, ammonia, or bleach. If the walls are new construction, you may also need a primer sealer.

If you are not hanging pre-pasted wallpaper, keep in mind that you will need different adhesives for the walls, seams, and any borders. The types you will need depend on the paper you have chosen, so ask your wallpaper dealer for the manufacturer's recommendations.

Adhesive that has been premixed is easier to work with than adhesive you have to mix yourself. If you do choose to use dry paste, make sure you mix it with distilled water only. In addition, choose adhesives that are clay-based rather than cellulose- or wheat-based. Though they are a bit more difficult to work with, they provide the best adhesion.

Preparing the Walls

Most surfaces are easier to prepare than previously papered walls, but any irregular surface needs special attention.

Painted Walls

Scrape off loose paint and lightly sand painted walls until they are smooth, and then dust them off. De-gloss the walls by using fine sandpaper or an extra-strong solution of TSP (or a non-phosphate substitute) or ammonia and water.

Repair and wash the walls (see How to Repair Drywall or How to Repair Plaster Walls & Ceilings). Once the surface is dry, apply primer sealer unless you know the paint is alkyd.

Existing Wallpaper

If you want to re-wallpaper a wall, far and away the best option is to remove the old paper. For more about how to do this, please see How to Remove Old Wallpaper. If you don't want to go to the trouble, or the old paper is difficult to remove, you can attempt wallpapering over the top if the old paper is a single, smooth layer. Be aware, however, that several mishaps can occur, so it is best to test the new paper in an inconspicuous location before tackling the whole wall.

Score the old wallpaper before applying new.

A lot of your success will depend on the kind of new paper you choose and the nature of your old paper, so consult with your retailer before making any purchase. For example, the old paper may come loose when it is moistened with the paste for the new paper, making it impossible to achieve a smooth surface.

Or, with the moisture from the paste, the ink from the old paper may bleed through, indicating the need for a primer sealer. If the old paper is vinyl, it may not accept the adhesive for the new paper; in this case, first apply a vinyl-to-vinyl primer, which will not only ensure adhesion of the new paper but also serve as a mildewcide.

If you have tested a small area and are confident of your ultimate results, start by preparing the wall. Re-paste any loose areas, sand any rough spots and all seams, and then spackle any dents or nicks. Using ammonia and water or a solution of TSP (or a non-phosphate alternative), wash the wall from bottom to top and allow it to dry overnight.

Mildewed Surfaces

If you are not sure whether stains are from mildew, try to wash them with a solution of detergent and water. If this is ineffective, the stains are likely mildew.

Wearing eye protection and rubber gloves, sponge on a solution of half bleach and half water and then a solution of TSP (or a non-phosphate substitute) and water, and rinse well. Let the surface dry completely—at least 24 hours. Then apply a coat of alkyd primer sealer mixed with a fungicide additive.

New Plaster Walls

Before papering, you will have to wait until the new plaster has cured thoroughly—this can take between one and four months. Consult with your contractor for the recommended time. Neutralize the new plaster by washing it with vinegar, and then apply two coats of high-quality primer sealer.

New Wallboard

All wallboard joints should be taped, spackled, sanded, and then dusted with a short-napped soft brush. Remove the last particles of dust with a damp sponge. Finally, apply drywall primer-sealer.

Uneven Surfaces

Cinderblock, concrete, wood paneling, textured plaster, and textured paint are uneven surfaces that will have to be smoothed before applying any wallpaper. For light to moderate unevenness, or for a small area, apply non-shrinking spackle or wallboard taping compound. When the wall is dry, sand the area and apply primer sealer. You can also smooth such a surface by hanging liner paper, available where you buy wallpaper. If a surface is severely uneven, it should be plastered over.

Black Chalk Paint Dining Table

Black Chalk Paint Dining Table

I love using Chalk Paint to paint furniture, and just about anything. So today I'm sharing the 5 top ways to seal Chalk Paint (plus pros and cons of each)!

5 TOP Ways To SEAL Chalk Paint!! Best ways to seal Chalk Paint and Milk Paint for furniture. artsychicksrule.com #sealchalkpaint #chalkpaintsealer #milkpaintsealer #sealingmilkpaint

I've had a long love affair with Chalk Paint.

I've been painting and refinishing furniture (and just stuff) for so many years, I can not even count.
So when I first heard about this Chalk Paint stuff, I had to try it out. That was at least 8 or so years ago.
I mean, how fun is it to try something new when you've been using the same ole, same ole for years?

So much fun.

Well, the Chalk Paint led into so many brands and types, which then led into Milk Paint and so on and so on. But today it's all about Chalk Paint.
However, these tips for how to seal Chalk Paint can also go along with sealing Milk Paint, too.

So keep that in mind if you are a Milk Paint lover. I never really got on board with that much.
I do have a few pieces on my blog that are milk painted but I didn't fall in love with it.
Although, I do still plan to do a few more pieces with it! (I have more samples to use over here and want to try a few things)

Of course I started out using wax to seal Chalk Paint because that is how I was told to do it.
I quickly, very quickly, decided to try poly instead. I had good luck with it (and at the time, wasn't even sure if it was supposed to work or not because I hadn't really seen anyone using it as a sealer for CP)

Wax and I have not always had a love affair. ;)
It's a love/hate relationship, for sure. And for many reasons.

As I go through the top 5 ways to seal Chalk Paint today, I'm also going to give the pros and cons of each, that I've found along the way, plus a few product options.
You'll find there is no "perfect" sealer. They all have pros and cons.
It just depends on the look you are after, the durability you are after and the amount of work you'd like to put into it.
I hope this post will be helpful to you in your future makeover adventures!

I finished 5 boards with Chalk Paint and the varying sealers so you can see (somewhat anyway, it's hard in photos) what the different finishes look like. (AND how the different finishes change the look of the paint)
I really should be calling this 6 but one is not an actual sealer that I'm sharing today but it can be used as such…if you accept the cons that go along with it.

5 Ways To Seal Chalk Paint

5 TOP Ways To SEAL Chalk Paint!! Best ways to seal Chalk Paint and Milk Paint for furniture. artsychicksrule.com #sealchalkpaint #chalkpaintsealer #milkpaintsealer #sealingmilkpaint

Isn't it amazing how each top coat gives the paint a completely different look?
That is something else to keep in mind when deciding on a top coat for your project.
By the way, I used Duck Egg Blue (Annie Sloan Chalk Paint) on the sample boards.

1 – Wax

Well, you know we had to start there, right?

5 TOP Ways To SEAL Chalk Paint!! Best ways to seal Chalk Paint and Milk Paint for furniture. artsychicksrule.com #sealchalkpaint #chalkpaintsealer #milkpaintsealer #sealingmilkpaint

PROS-

  • gives a beautiful, unmatched sheen and lustre
  • feels so smooth
  • paint can be added for a variety of color options
  • resists water
  • fairly durable wear
  • usually won't yellow over time

CONS-

  • takes a bit of "elbow grease" to apply and buff
  • more time consuming to apply
  • needs touch ups and repeat applications over time
  • not impervious to heat
  • can not be repainted over, except with more Chalk Paint

Some waxes to try:

  • Dixie Belle Wax
  • Americana Decor Creme Wax
  • FolkArt Home Decor Wax
  • Annie Sloan Wax
  • Miss Mustard Seed's Wax
  • Briwax

2 – Polyacrylic

I'm going to be talking about water based poly, not oil based. Oil based is similar but it has more of a tendency to yellow over time so I don't use it often.
You can use polyacrylic sprays or liquids.

5 TOP Ways To SEAL Chalk Paint!! Best ways to seal Chalk Paint and Milk Paint for furniture. artsychicksrule.com #sealchalkpaint #chalkpaintsealer #milkpaintsealer #sealingmilkpaint

PROS-

  • multiple finish options, shiny to matte and even flat
  • very durable
  • you can spray, brush or roll the product
  • quicker application time
  • paint color can be added to create an array of finished looks
  • can be painted over

CONS-

  • even though it's water based, it can yellow over time changing the color of your paint
  • stains can sometimes appear in the underlying Chalk Paint
  • might need more than one coat
  • brush strokes are possible, if using a brush

Some polys to try:

  • High Performance Top Coat
  • Flat Out Flat
  • Polycrylic
  • Varathane

3 – Glaze

Glaze is a fun finish if you want to change the color of your project, subtlety.

5 TOP Ways To SEAL Chalk Paint!! Best ways to seal Chalk Paint and Milk Paint for furniture. artsychicksrule.com #sealchalkpaint #chalkpaintsealer #milkpaintsealer #sealingmilkpaint

PROS-

  • a variety of colors are available
  • similar to apply as poly but a brush or rag can be used
  • adds dimension and interest
  • can be painted over

CONS-

  • doesn't give as durable a finish
  • glazes are usually colored, (white, brown, black, etc) so the color of the glaze will affect the final finish color

Some glazes to try:

  • Winter White Glaze
  • Van Dyke Brown Glaze
  • Rustoleum Smoked Glaze
  • Rustoleum Aged Glaze

4 – Oils

Oils work well with Milk Paint but they can also be used with Chalk Paint. I don't really use oils to seal Chalk Paint but it is a popular choice.
It works well on reviving old wood too!

5 TOP Ways To SEAL Chalk Paint!! Best ways to seal Chalk Paint and Milk Paint for furniture. artsychicksrule.com #sealchalkpaint #chalkpaintsealer #milkpaintsealer #sealingmilkpaint

PROS-

  • similar sheen as wax
  • not as durable as wax or poly
  • less toxic to use
  • easy application
  • can add extra coats for more sheen, durability

CONS-

  • painting over it can be a problem
  • doesn't have the same smooth, finished  "feel" as wax and poly
  • the color of the oil can impart color onto your painted piece
  • oil can "age" over time and yellow

Some oils to try:

  • Miss Mustard Seed's Hemp Oil
  • Van's All Natural Wood Finish
  • FolkArt Finishing Oil

5 – Rustoleum Matte Finish

I gave this one it's own category because I find it to be a bit different from the other polys I've used.
To me, it's more of a blend, not fully poly-like.

5 TOP Ways To SEAL Chalk Paint!! Best ways to seal Chalk Paint and Milk Paint for furniture. artsychicksrule.com #sealchalkpaint #chalkpaintsealer #milkpaintsealer #sealingmilkpaint

PROS-

  • easy application
  • durable
  • nice sheen, more like wax
  • quick dry time

CONS-

  • although durable, it doesn't seem quite as durable as regular poly
  • nice matte finish
  • additional coats may be needed
  • the jury is still out on whether this yellows over time

Get it here >>>Rustoleum Matte Finish

And last, but not least, number 6 which doesn't really count as it's not a "sealer"…but I'm including it anyway. ;)

6 – Buffing

Say what? Just buffed?
Yes, buffing. Not adding a sealer at all. Did you know that Chalk Paint buffs up really nicely without any top coat??
It creates a lovely, buttery soft sheen when buffed.

5 TOP Ways To SEAL Chalk Paint!! Best ways to seal Chalk Paint and Milk Paint for furniture. artsychicksrule.com #sealchalkpaint #chalkpaintsealer #milkpaintsealer #sealingmilkpaint

PROS-

  • easy to do
  • buffs to a soft sheen
  • more suited for outside items, weathered, etc.
  • keeps the color of the paint more "pure"

CONS-

  • not suitable for daily use
  • not durable like wax or poly

So there they are. The 5 top ways to seal Chalk Paint (or Milk Paint too).
I hope that you find this information helpful!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good table for price As everyone else mentioned, the dining table is brown instead of black. But it is a very dark brown. Overall, the quality is nice for the price tag. Super easy to style because it's relatively plain and I love the legs! It adds something interesting to the design.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Looks great - but beware - it scratches easily The table looks great. But be very careful - this table scratches very easily. I was gently swishing a cup of tea and now there are scratch marks! See photo. It's a shame that I have to use a tablecloth and/or placemats to protect the table. I don't mind using tablecloths/placemats, but I am fearful of when Covid-19 is over and I have guests for a party. I do not want to be one of those crazy people forcing everyone to use coasters to avoid having the table get scratched up like Leo DiCaprio in The Revenant.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Set Without seeing this table in person I was a bit nervous, but overall it's awesome. Chairs are comfortable and it looks great in the space! I couldn't ask for a better table or price!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not Black We originally saw this table online and traveled to the nearest Living Spaces store 2 hours away. We really how sleek and modern look of the table. The table is advertised as black online. However, it's more of a dark brown color. Regardless we still love it. The table is well made and easy to assemble. Plus the price is unbeatable!

The 9 Best Dining Tables for Every Style

Our editors independently research, test, and recommend the best products; you can learn more about our review process here. We may receive commissions on purchases made from our chosen links.

Gone are the days when you needed to leave the house to find the dining table of your dreams. Whether you're shopping for a traditional farmhouse design or something more suited to your mid-century modern tastes, there are endless options just a click away. Before you start shopping, just make sure you measure your space, says interior decorator and author of Rental Style, Chelsey Brown.

Brown encourages shoppers to "Map out (on the floor) where the table will be going with painters tape. This will give you an idea of how much space the table you're eyeing will take up." Don't overlook quality, either. One way to do this is by always reading reviews first.

Interior designer Diana Weinstein, of DW Designs, points out that functionality and care are also key. For example, do you need it to expand? Where are the legs and how will your chairs fit? What does it need in terms of cleaning and maintenance? Does it need to be assembled? To simplify your shopping process, we've scoured the web and read hundreds of reviews to chisel our list down to the best of the best.

Here, the most beautiful dining tables available online.

The Floyd Table

Floyd is a direct-to-consumer furniture company that's all about making our lives easier. Instead of offering tons of style choices, they focus their efforts on developing one amazing no-brainer product in each category.

The Floyd Table is a great example of this. The versatile piece can serve as a desk or dining table for up to four people. Featuring a linoleum and birch wood top and powder-coated steel legs, the coolest thing about this table is that it's available in a bunch of different color combinations—including our favorite, blush and white.

Zinus Jen 47 Inch Dining Table

If you're on the hunt for a simple but refined mid-century modern table and you're on a small budget, stop looking and order this Zinus Jen dining table ASAP. Buyers are blown away by the statement this small and thrifty table makes in any space.

Zinus' dining table is ideal for small dining rooms and even NYC-sized kitchens, plus it can fit a family of four. Reviewers attest to the fact that it's easy to assemble and far surpassed their expectations. It's also available in a walnut finish (for a little extra money), but the natural hue is mid-century to the bone.

Rivet Industrial Mid-Century Modern Hairpin Dining Table

Rivet, Amazon's mid-century inspired design brand, continues to drop jaws with their distinct home furnishings. This table—a little bit retro, a little bit industrial—can function as a dining table or even a desk. A hardwood top with a walnut finish floats on black metal hairpin legs.

Reviewers attest that the table is solidly built and quite easy to assemble—taking less than 20 minutes. If you're just as obsessed with the design as we are, you can also add a matching coffee table, side table, or console to fully integrate your living space.

Rove Concepts Tulip Table

While most of us would kill for an original Knoll Saarinen Tulip Table (view on Knoll), unfortunately, it isn't always in the budget. Luckily, this premium reproduction—courtesy of Rove Concepts—is an affordable alternative.

The trademark single-pedestal tulip base is made from strong cast aluminum which supports a heavy, satin-finished lacquer top. While the table is the definition of mid-century design, it can work in pretty much every aesthetic so long as you put thought into the chairs you pair it with. If you do want to stay true to Sarrinen's vision, order up the matching tulip chairs.

Article Oval Dining Table

An oval dining table is a great compromise between square and round options, and it's an eye-catching way to shape up a boxy space. This mid-century table from Article pairs sculptural rubberwood legs with a veneered, starburst-style top that delivers just the retro glamour we're after.

The table is built to fit four to six people, but reviewers note that it's generously sized and could really fit more. Many people are also quick to note that it doesn't scratch or stain easily.

Fortunato Table

Wayfair's Fortunato Dining Table is just the multifunctional touch your farmhouse-style home needs. Since it's extendable, it's a great option for those with smaller dining spaces who only need extra seating on special occasions.

The classic table features an extra leaf which transforms it from a dining space for six to seating for eight in a matter of minutes. It's crafted from solid walnut and finished with a natural grain that lends it an almost vintage feel.

CB2 Stone Table Round

We're mildly obsessed with CB2's stone collection which, along with a side table and coffee table, includes this stunning dining table. Why, you ask? Well, we've seen few options more unique.

Designed by Caleb Zipperer, this vintage-inspired piece creatively layers stone, brass, and glass. While function is always the main purpose of a dining table, this dimensional piece basically doubles as an art installation.

Pottery Barn Matteo Extendable Dining Table

If you already have a set of show-stopping chairs that you'd like to be the focal point of your space, opting for a simple and straightforward table is the way to go. This high-quality, classically designed wood table from Pottery Barn is pretty much a blank slate for your dining room.

The Matteo Extendable Dining Table features a weathered, distressed finish that delivers a subtle warmth and character that won't overwhelm your space. It also features a butterfly leaf which can transform the six-person table to an eight-person table in an instant.

Anthropologie Anya Travertine Dining Table

One of the more unique dining tables we've ever seen, Anthropologie's Anya features a smooth travertine top set above cylindrical hardwood legs. It has a truly organic feel to it, so it'll add instant visual interest to your space without overwhelming your existing decor.

At 29.5 x 48 inches, the Anya is small enough for a compact dining space, but big enough to accommodate four to six people. We suggest pairing it with a statement-making upholstered chair.
